Hello,

We've been tidying the warehouse and we thought we'd send out a few emails over the next few months looking at some interesting records we still have that may have passed you by first time round ... so here are some punk (and punkish) records you may have missed or never even heard of... they're all brill!

1. PSYKIK VOLTS - TOTALLY USELESS (7" PIC DISC) DAMGOOD277P  £4.99

I first brought the Psykik Volts 7" in 1980, it has always been one of my favourite odd old new wave singles so when we got the chance to re-issue it and also a album of unreleased gems we jumped at the chance...

Psykik Volts were an original New Wave band formed in 1978, inspired/influenced by bands like The Clash, Sex Pistols etc. All aged around 18 at the time of releasing our self-financed single & it was our first time in the studio, hence some of the rough & ready bits (feedback, bum notes etc.). We formed just a few months before recording the single in early 1979. We considered ourselves more 'new wave' than 'punk' at the time as the initial wave of punk bands had died down by then. A very DIY band, they designed the picture sleeve, had it printed and stuck them all together their selves! They were from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire which is near Leeds, by the way.

John Peel played the single quite a lot on Radio 1, & it was subsequently repressed on the MHG label after the initial 1000 copies had sold. I think they released another 500 (in plain white sleeves)

The band got signed shortly afterwards to Graduate Records (UB40 etc.), who recorded 3 songs but never released them. They split at the end of 1979. Vik & drummer Mick Reed then got signed to Rockburgh Records in 1980/81 & released a single called 'Wooden Heart', calling themselves 'Poptones' (after the Public Image song).

'Totally Useless/Horror Stories No. 5' was featured in 'Record Collector' magazine in 2006 in their 'Top 100 rare punk singles' list & valued at £50.

2. THE GAGGERS - SHARP LIES (7") DAMGOOD432 £4.99

The Gaggers got together through a staunch hatred of everything new and polished . From members of disco lepers, botox rats, black list brigade, the blowouts, the seminals, the troubadours, the hateful, needle automatics and the london guns. They play in your face, spit in there arse punk rock that’s out with the new and in with the old!. They don’t give a fuck so why should you. Gag on this, get off your computer and go put your fingers down someone’s throat!!!

3. THE CUTE LEPERS - SMART ACCESSORIES (7") DAMGOOD354 £4.99

You know Steve E. Nix from The Briefs? This is his other band! Really great '78 style punk-pop!

'Smart Accessories' is available on a choice of red, white or clear vinyl 7"! Featuring exclusive Beatles cover "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" on the B-side.

4. THE NOW - FUZZTONE FIZZADELIC (CD) DAMGOOD244CD  £8.99

The Now were a band from the good old days of Punk Rock, although they were far removed from what is traditionally known as ‘Punk’. Intelligent songs, political lyrics and a musical style that was much more in keeping with bands like the Gang of 4, PragVeg and other ‘New Wave’ bands.

The band are: Mike McGuire on Vocals, Steve Rolls on Guitar, Faz Farrow on Bass and Joe MacColl on Drums.

They released two singles ‘Development Corporations’ on Ultimate Records in November 1977 and ‘Into The 80’s’ on Raw Records in 1979. They had split up by the end of 1979.

This album was recorded during 2004 by the four original members of The Now.
The track listing represents the first set list from The Now as performed in 1977.
In true punk rock stylee rehearsed for 3 hours with 2 days in the studio for recording and mixing. Not bad after 27 years (some of the band not having played since then).

5. THE PORK DUKES - BEND AND FLUSH (7" PIC DISC) DAMGOOD280P  £4.99

Limited edition reissue of the Pork Dukes debut single on 7 inch pic disc

Formed in 1976, the Pork Dukes were ruder than the Sex Pistols, but didn't achieve the Pistols' notoriety. Playing incognito, there were rumours the Pork Dukes featured Keith Moon on vocals, members of Led Zeppelin, The Rezillos, Tenpole Tudor, Steeleye Span and even Dudley Moore. Only some of this was true.

The Pork Dukes released their first single 'Bend & Flush' in the heady summer of 1977, and the rude content and cover of the single helped it sell over 20,000 copies. Although the notorious Pork Dukes had three UK indie hit singles and two album releases, they received no radio airplay. That's not surprising, because the band offended society with sexy song titles, like: Throbbing Gristle; Making Bacon, My Mother Gave Me A Gun For Xmas, I Like Your Big Tits, Let's See If It Fits; and Telephone Masturbator.

The late, legendary UK DJ John Peel, on his Radio One show, remarked that "the Pork Dukes would have hits with their infuriating catchy singles, were they not so manifestly unbroadcastable!"

6. THE COGS - NO EXPECTATIONS (7") DAMGOOD172 £4.99

The Cogs were from New York City and are made up of five diverse individuals who together make some of the best noises i've ever heard. They had a couple of releases on labels in the states in the mid to late 90's and then we received a demo of 13 songs, we loved it and soon after Viva! was released. Sounding like a cross between The Muffs and The Pixies they really are worth checking out.

7. THRILLED SKINNY - POP STAR PRAT (7") DAMGOOD24 £4.99

Thrilled Skinny were a four piece from Chorlton, just outside of Manchester or even Luton led by Simon Goalpost.

They released loads of stuff in the late '80's and early '90s, we did a seven inch with them near the end of the band as a mate of mine was putting out their 'Smells A Bit Fishy' CD. Andy went on to be in Barefoot Contessa.

So, thanks for reading this, hopefully you found it interesting, we'll do more like this over the coming months.

Cheers

Ian & Duncan
