Hello,
We've been tidying the warehouse and we thought we'd send out a few emails over the next few months looking at some interesting records we still have that were either did on Damaged Goods or were done by associated labels and that we have copies of...so here are a few garage nuggets you may have missed or never even heard of...
1. THE GUARANTEED UGLY 'GYPSY GIRL' DAMAGED GOODS DAMGOOD116 £4.99
The Guaranteed Ugly first came to our attention when they were supporting Thee Headcoats at the Wild Western Rooms in London, we had just done a single with them on Hangman’s Daughter and thought it would be a good idea to do one on DG as well, they went on to do their debut album on Hangman's Daughter as well, we have copies of both these releases and bloody good they are too.
2. ARMITAGE SHANKS 'ARE FRIENDS ELECTRIC' DAMAGED GOODS PICTURE DISC 7" £5.99
A great 7" with the legendary 'ARMITAGE SHANKS' in fine fettle with two different versions of the TUBEWAY ARMY classic, pressed in glorious technicolor as a terrible quality Picture Disc 7" it really is no great shock we still have a few of these in stock...but IT IS A GREAT SINGLE and well worth adding to your wants lists!
3. YE ASCOYNE D'ASCOYNES - JUST THE BIGGEST THING HANGMAN 7" GIBBET1 £5.99
Ye Ascoyne d’Ascoynes were formed by Bob Collins and Ian Smith with Kevin Younger and Mark Aitken to play this brand of Pebbles & Nuggets US 60s garage punk. Eventually the band would develop to play predominantly Collins’ own songs and released this classic Billy Childish-produced 45 ‘Just the Biggest Thing’ in 1992.
They had a lathe cut 7" on Spinout last year and we've still got a few of these and if you don't have it, you really should.
4. KEN ARDLEY PLAYBOYS 'THAT'S IT' 7" HANGMAN'S DAUGHTER KETCH 10 £5.99
THE KEN ARDLEY PLAYBOYS formed in November 1993 as
the bastard son of Victor Mount's 'The Ding Dong Twist Club' A night
out at the 'DDT Club'will be spent glugging Thunderbird cocktails and
eating Pork Pies whilst listening to Pinky and Perky records. For American
readers, Pinky and Perky are a puppet / pig duo who hosted a children's TV
variety show in the early sixties. 'Pork Products' feature high on the
menu but so does salad cream, super lager and all manner of post-war British
'We may be poor but we can still have fun' crap.
The Ding Dong ethos informs the band's philosophy but there are other
influences as well. When Bob joined the band he brought his northern accent and
his admiration for The Fall, which turned the band's sound into a
bloody-minded noisy din. Adam Dant, 'the musician' of the group, has a
fondness for 'Bang Banga Boom Euro Pop', whilst both Graham Revell and
Adam McEwen enjoy the music of Schoenberg.
But what of the lad himself 'Mr Ken Ardley'. Although Ken is the leader
of the band, liking to steal the show with his rendition of 'Windmills of My
Mind' he is a recluse. Between a busy recording schedule and making live
appearances at his day job (Ken is a schools inspector in the London borough of
Southwark) he leads a solitary life and hang glides over his home city of
Newcastle whenever he can.
Mr Ardley has made quite the name for himself as the very wonderful British contemporary artist BOB AND ROBERTA SMITH and if this was a painting then it would be worth squillions (probably) but as it's just an old 7" single, it's still yours for £6, Cheers!
5. VARIOUS ARTISTS - LIVE AT THE BOSTON ARMS E.P. DAMAGED GOODS 7" DAMGOOD164 £5.99
A great 4 track E.P. recorded at the Dirty Water Club at the Boston Arms in 1998, features a track each from THEE HEADCOATS / THEE HEADCOATEES / THE SOLAR FLARES & THE GUARANTEED UGLY, recorded live by none other than Wolf Howard.
We have no idea why we still have copies of this 7" but we do, we think there were a thousand pressed...
6. THE STUCKISTS - 'ART OR ARSE' DAMAGED GOODS DAMGOOD198 7" £5.99
Well, here’s an interesting little record we did back in 2001, It’s the first (and I think, last?) release from the Stuckists, a group of ‘artists’ (in the painting sense of the word), including Billy Childish and Charles Thompson.
The Stuckists were fighting against the bullshit factory that was the new art hierarchy – i.e. Tracy Emin, Damian Hurst and in particular the ‘Turner Prize’
For example in the ‘Stuckist manifesto’ it states that: ‘the only artist who wouldn’t be in danger of winning the Turner Prize is Turner…Turner did not rebuild launderettes. He did not take photographs. He did not make videos., nor, to our knowledge, did he pickle sheep or construct concrete casts of negative space. He did in fact, paint pictures!
So that’s the reason for the single but let's not forget about the music ‘Art Or Arse’ is a great PUNK ROCK tune and kicks off with a great sample of Tracy Emin at her eloquent best. If you liked ‘We Hate The Fuckin’ NME’ by Thee Headcoats then you’ll love this.
‘Anachronism In The UK’ is on the b-side plus a reading of the Stuckists Manifesto.
and lastly...
7. THE BRISTOLS - 'I'VE GOT A THING ABOUT YOU' DAMAGED GOODS DAMGOOD215 7" £5.99
The Bristols final 7" before the band split up and Fabienne Delsol went solo (with a few of her fellow Bristols and Liam Watson / Toe Rag at the recording controls) and it's a great 7", 2 tracks, perfect for one of these locked-in nights when you want something to make you get up and shuffle around the kitchen!
So, thanks for reading this, hopefully you found it interesting, we'll do more like this over the coming months.
Don't forget we have the new single from THE COURETTES on pre-sale and the new LURKERS 7" out tomorrow
Cheers
Ian & Duncan
