MEKONS – OUT OF DESPERATION (LUXURY CHICKEN SONG)

“A luxury chicken is something very special and unique and of great value. It is also a hand-painted Mekons T-shirt with a chicken smoking a cigarette on it

Hagar the Womb are very special and unique and of great value and I’m glad they didn’t really split up that night at the Hawley Arms even though they stole our rider.”

HAGAR THE WOMB - FARE DODGING WITH THE MEKON’S RIDER (3 BEERS & A LEMON)

Written By Ruth Elias & Chris Knowles.

Recorded at Church Road Recording Company, Hove by Paul Pascoe 2025

Hags: Ruth, Karen, Paul, Lorna, Mitch, Chris.

Sleeve Design & Illustration by LornaTiefholz. Words by Ruth

The label image shows Chris knocking back one of the 3 beers on the train. This song emerged shortly after beer 3 was downed

Fare Dodging with the Mekon’s Rider came into being after we supported our all-time favourite band the Mekons a few years back in Brighton. Unlike the Hags, they had a bountiful rider including a bowl of fruit topped by a very splendid lemon. When it came to us making a mad dash for the train back to London, Ruth sneaked three beers from the Mekon’s rider into her bag and then found she couldn’t leave the lemon!

Imbued with lawlessness, we bunked the train after being told we couldn’t board it as we had the wrong tickets. We finished the beers before it left the station, but reader - that lemon was never consumed. A sorry end to the citrus but in this song celebrating our evening’s gains, it will never be forgotten.

THEN NEXT MONTH….

Wild Billy Childish & CTMF - House On Fire (DAMGOOD644CD/LP)

It’s been three long years since CTMF’s last studio album, 2023’s Failure Not Success, and now they’re back with a brand-new record! House On Fire finds them firing on all cylinders and dare we say it – they’ve never sounded finer!

The album features remixed versions of their covers of The Saints’ ‘Untitled’ and The Yardbirds’ ‘Shapes Of Things’ (both previously only available on limited edition 7” singles), along with twelve new recordings.

Also released on the same day is a four-song 7” EP (DAMGOOD645) featuring ‘Keep Mojave Weird’, taken from the album, plus three exclusive non-album tracks.

Wild Billy Childish & CTMF - Keep Mojave Weird EP (DAMGOOD645-7")

An American-themed four-song EP featuring ‘Keep Mojave Weird’ taken from the band’s House On Fire album plus three exclusive non-album tracks!

Released on the same day as House On Fire (the band’s first new album in over three years), this EP is partly inspired by a recent US visit.

Alongside ‘Keep Mojave Weird’ it also features a Bo Diddley-esque cover of Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis Tennessee’, a new version of ‘Wile E Coyote’, and a brand-new instrumental called ‘Thalypo Fuel Station’.

QUICK ROMANCE - BRIAN JONES'S HAIR (DAMGOOD642-7")

This is their debut single and we think it's great...there will be more coming along too. Not many left...

It’s time, Brothers & Sisters, to be seen on the scene with Quick Romance.

That’s, Quick Romance - as seen with Jon Spencer, The Briefs, Deaf Devils etc, and ripping it up in various small troll holes around the West Country.

Hayden James, on lead guitar, and Gabe Bonner on bass are the rock’n’roll bookends that were Wayne Kramer and Fred “Sonic” Smith, redrawn for the here and now. The boys see themselves as “two straws in the same Coke” (other gut-rotting, thirst-quenching, shit-coloured drinks are available).

Quick Romance singer, Matilda Scotland, slapped Ian Hunter down in the first round to relieve him of his shades, which she now wears proudly as she warns us of the perils of growing up in a big bad world. She likes clothes, music and Brian Jones’s hair.

Drummer Oliver Bull-Lifely, moves like a wind chime in a tropical storm, he is the time-keeper’s time-keeper. Unlike the White Rabbit, you can’t set you watch by him, but who wears a watch these days?

If you want to know what you are about to experience, why don’t you try imagining Poly Styrene joining The Sick Things for a chorus of “Bondage Boy”. If you don’t want to know, why don’t you…

And, for the record, teen punks Quick Romance will sing for Scotland Yard… if the price is right.

Coming soon to a stage near you. That’s Quick Romance!

“Hey, little girl, would you like a dance? Hey, little girl, want a quick romance?” Marc Bolan, from “Celebrate Summer”

and if you’re in London and looking for a fun gig on the 14th MARCH…look no further...

It’s the Mopeds acoustically plus Monty Oxymoron in a lovely pub in Clerkenwell on a saturday afternoon / evening…and there’s BINGO
