Cakey Pig on the Damaged Goods shop
Monkhouse were from Bangor, Co.Down in Northern Ireland named after the legendary Bob Monkhouse whose dedication to showbiz had, in many ways, influenced them. A great raw, good old fashioned punk band, the lead singer Keith, would be off the stage as much as he was on it. Described by the band in 1995 as ‘What punk should be / powerful. energetic but always clever’ ‘an absolute stormer of a band’ angry’ and ‘casually dressed’! We did two singles and an album produced by Frankie Stubbs of Leatherface and sadly nobody took a blind bit of notice at all. Still we really liked them, a good bunch.
They did a split single with Wat Tyler on Rejected records too. ‘Cakey Pig’ was released on CD on the 15th of May 1995. They also did a track for our second Xmas E.P. ‘Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart’ but the very next day you took it to Record & tape Exchange (Dampud 57) double 7” released 19.12.94.
In 2021 they were featured on our Christmas compilation ‘A Damaged Christmas Gift For You’ doing their version of Cliff’s ‘Mistletoe And Wine’ that had originally appeared on DAMPUD57, their version is called ‘Guinness And Wine’
The A-side 'Misfits & Freaks' is a re-recorded track from the The Courettes' third album, Back In Mono. Presented here with a longer intro and extra verse.
It comes backed with an exclusive new song 'Killer Eyes'.
Cheer up, cheer up! It's the end of the world!
“We wrote 'Misfits & Freaks' after a bittersweet concert in France in 2020, on our last tour in the pre-pandemic world. We played on the very evening France went in its first lockdown - our show at 9 pm, lockdown at midnight. Back then, nobody actually knew what was a lockdown, what was a pandemic and what the hell we were getting into, so people that day really partied as if there was no tomorrow. The audience and us, we were really having a party at the end of the world! That's how we felt that day: at the end of the world as we once knew it. And I guess we were right on that.
It's also an ode to all the misfits & freaks, a call to our punk rock community. We were worried about the possible consequences of the pandemics, with venues being closed and the economic choking of independent and experimental artists. The fear of a boring new world without places to breathe and drift away from the established mainstream cultural diet, a boring new world without the community feeling that only a rock show can create. A call against the normalisation of Netflix and isolation, a hope that us misfits and freaks would survive. And now, two years later, we can say that we did. Cheer up!”

FOUR SONG EP FEATURING STEVE AND KICKS FROM THE BRIEFS!
Steve E. Nix and The Famous Lizards are a new four-piece group led by guitarist/singer Steve E. Nix (from legendary Seattle punk band The Briefs). Accompanying him as The Famous Lizards are bassist Kicks (also from The Briefs), guitarist Emi Pop and drummer Miles Freeborn. The Motorcade EP is the band’s debut release. Available on a limited edition black vinyl 7”, it features four killer pop-punk tracks, just what you’d expect from the prolific pen of Steve E. Nix. “I’m a punk rocker who loves guitars and interesting songs. I really like The Godfathers” says Steve.
Steve has been putting out quality underground music since 2000 when The Briefs released their first single ‘Poor And Weird’. After four albums, a slew of singles and relentless touring, The Briefs took a well-earned hiatus. Never one to stay still for long Steve almost immediately formed and fronted The Cute Lepers. With Briefs’ bassist Kicks on board and a rotating cast of drummers, guitarists and back-up singers The Cute Lepers continued to tour across the US and Europe and released three albums, all on Damaged Goods Records, along with a bunch of 7” singles. In 2014 The Briefs started touring again and also began work on an album, Platinum Rats, which was eventually released by Damaged Goods Records in 2019. The Briefs are currently planning dates for 2022.
TRACKLISTING...
(Get in the) Motorcade - “When one comes to town it’s like a real-life scene from an international espionage movie. They’re bizarre and heavy. Serious stuff for serious folks, apparently. Poor James Brady… ouch! Shoulda aimed better and hit Reagan.”
Hallways - “A song about running away from rehab, as an adult. Some of them you just gotta run away from. Tried to give it a Slade stomp on the chorus but it’s still a little dark.”
Nite Life - “When my girl and I go out dancing or to see a band, we’re thrilled that there’s still an underbelly of Seattle. The song’s for her, “I’ll stay away from the dull drum line, with you in mind.” The rest of the lyrics won’t make a lick of sense to anyone but me.”
Avenue Child - “The kids hanging out on The Ave in the U-District. Changing faces have been there since I was a teenager. Some of them turn into rock stars. Some of them just don’t live very long. Musically striving to be very rock n’ roll on this one.”
BRAND NEW 7” FROM LEED'S FINEST!
